The Underground City is one Jules Verne's "Lost" Scottish novels (the other being The Green Ray) and contains his usual mixture of imagination, scientific rigour, interacting personalities, and simple breadth. A classic victorian novel of human survival 1500 feet below the surface in a revived coal mine. The underground city has everything you could possibly need (in victorian times at least) including a lake and nice homes. All is not perfect however as a malicious evil is intent on destruction.
This novel also shows Jules Verne's love of Scotland, and the inspiration the country provided him. The novel is based on Loch Katrine (The Trossachs area), an area he thoroughly researched before writing this novel.
