The Grimm Affair
The Grimm Affair is a historical novel based on the true story of a veteran of the First World War. It is a story of two men who faced each other on the Meuse Argonne battlefield as enemies and who, after a chance attempt at one finding the other years after the war, began a friendship and correspondence that lasted 20 years until the onset of the second world war.
It is a story of self discovery and redemption; An episode in friendship that defies all of the propagandic beliefs that we, as fellow human beings, tend to hold against one another. It is a proof that brotherly love knows no bounds and overcomes all obstacles. It is a story of hope for humanity.
The Grimm Affair follows the lives of an American Bond Salesman and a German Bricklayer, both drafted into the Army to fight for their country. Each signed up with a patriotic ferver and the belief that the other is their sworn enemy and it was their duty to defend what they held dear. The encountered one another on the 27th of September, 1918 just outside of Very, France on the Meuse Argonne battlefield, one a machine gunner, the other an Army engineer.
Several years after the war, the American would peruse through his war chest of souveniers and come across a small stack of German papers and photos. What he did next spawned a correspondence that would last through the Great Depression to the early years of World War 2.
